ActionCOACH Ilminster presents… The Interview Series!
Over the next few months we will be interviewing local South West business owners, so that we can get to know both them and their businesses. In times like these we need to stick together!
This week we sat down with Shaun Whitehouse from Lanes Hotel.
“After 5 months, we are delighted to have re-opened our doors. It’s been great welcoming back regulars and new guests alike.
We have not been idle during the closure and the hotel has had a mini makeover and looks vibrant and fresh, with a beautiful restoration of the wood floors and new, cool & contemporary furniture. Check out our new and exciting menu format on the Eat page, this will be available for dinner and weekend lunches but we hope to extend to weekday lunches should there be sufficient demand. Initially, we will be open for limited hours only but again will extend these as demand returns. The hotel WiFi has also had a major upgrade is now 7 times faster than before lockdown. Lastly, we are sad to say that we are no longer offering spa treatments for the foreseeable future.
We have also been working hard to ensure that we open safe. All guest bedrooms are now ‘fogged’ before your arrival. In the rooms, we have taken a minimalist approach by removing anything that isn’t absolutely essential. We have a one-way system in the main hotel and offer full table service for drinks. Our risk assessments are available on request in PDF format and demonstrate all measures we have taken to keep our guests safe.”
We asked Shaun a few questions about himself and his business and here is what he had to say…
- Tell us about yourself and why you went into this business?
Honestly, I left school with little or no idea of what I wanted to do except; I didn’t want to stay at school and, I didn’t want to do something boring.
- What has the Lockdown and Covid-19 taught you?
Stay focused, persevere, challenge everything in your business, and when the Chancellor says ‘we will do whatever it takes’ this only applies to businesses with a rateable value of less than £51k PA.
- What if anything will you do differently post Lockdown?
I’ll be more selective of what business I take. If the margin isn’t there, I won’t take it.
- What is your favourite quote?
Treat every customer as you would wish to be treated yourself’ not sure who first said it but if you apply it to business every day, it will serve you well…
