If you have encountered the term ‘executive coaching’ you may be wondering who it is for? Perhaps you don’t think of yourself an ‘executive’ and so don’t think that it is for you.

In this blog I am going to dive into who an executive is and what executive coaching can do for them. By the end of this blog, you should know whether executive coaching is for you and maybe you’ll want to Book a Chat with me to find out more.

So, who is an executive?

I think the term executive suggests 1980s office blocks, power suits and long lunches, but I would define an executive as someone who manages or leads others in their organisation. There are many job titles that could be encompassed by the term ‘executive’ – from Sales Director and Marketing Manager to Vice President and CEO.

So, if you have a team – then you’re an executive in my book – power suit or not.

What stage of their career are they in?

Any leader, no matter whether they have been in the job a day, a year or a decade could benefit from executive coaching. It will maximise performance of the executive and subsequently their team.

For long-term holders of the executive title, we will be looking at existing activities and behaviours and working to optimise them. For new executives we can start from scratch building the foundations which will lead to outstanding success.

When is executive coaching really useful?

Executive coaching is particularly valuable during times of change for a business. This could be the expansion into a new market, introduction of a new product or even a takeover or merger. If there are significant changes in leadership in a business, perhaps because an owner is retiring or selling up then executive coaching really comes into its own.

Who is executive coaching not for?

This is an interesting point…are there some leaders that executive coaching just isn’t right for? Well frankly yes…for executive coaching to work and pay dividends the executive needs to be ready to look closely at themselves and their performance, be ready to embrace change, be keen to learn and develop and most importantly not be afraid of hard work…because there is plenty of that.
